Veronica Mccann - Late Models At Krikke Boys Event
RHR posted Wednesday March 5, 2008.
The Dirt Late Models were on hand for the first night of the Krikke Boys Shootout on Saturday night at Bunbury City Raceway.
Position number nine was the starting draw for the number 50 Intimidator in the first round of heats of the night. After moving up and sitting in fifth place for the majority of the race, McCann stumbled on the Bunbury surface with one lap to go allowing two cars underneath her to finish seventh.
Heat two for McCann saw the field line up in reverse grid formation which meant that Veronica started the race out of pole position. Beaten into the first turn by outside pole sitter Matt Nylander, McCann held second before being shunted in the rear by Bert Vosbergen on the exit of turn four which sent the number 50 machine spinning onto the infield and bringing on the caution lights. Veronica got the car fired back up and rejoined the field at the tail end after a chief steward’s decision to hand Veronica the Rear of Field penalty. Red Hot Roni made the remaining laps some of the most aggressive driving of the night as she powered the Intimidator through the field and crossed the line back up in second place.
Qualifying eighth for the 25 lap final and with Veronica confident that her machine was working well on the Bunbury surface made the ingredients for a good showing. After the green flag fell and the cars settled into race mode McCann made her move on the way up to the front of the field and was sitting comfortably in sixth position. With 12 laps to go, after Veronica had passed the newly crowned Australian Champion, Brad Ludlow made an attempt to regain his position with an inside dash on Veronica going into turn one. With no room to make the pass work, Ludlow spun Veronica in front of the field where she was then collected by another car. The result left Veronica with too much damage to the front end of the vehicle and was unable to be driven for the remainder of the feature race.
“I made the switch to Late Models because I was broadening my resume; it was all about gaining experience. I am trying to take positives out of every race meeting in these cars – as for tonight, well, I’m certainly happy that we got that thing turning and aside from that we were on the pace and had something to show. But I can’t help but be bitter about how I ended up on the infield.”
“We had this Intimidator running so well in the last two races tonight, we had the engine sorted coming into tonight and the setups sorted. At the end of the night, I’m walking away from here with another DNF (did not finish) result that was not my fault and that is extremely frustrating.”
Catch Veronica and the RHR team this Friday and Saturday night at the Kwinana Motorplex for the King of Kwinana. Results will be posted on www.veronicamccann.com
